The four other gymnasts competed together in the men’s group at 13-19 age- group winning the silver medal, just 0.1 behind the Russians who took Gold. They four were: Finn Gavin, aged 14 from Alnwick, Ryan Dury, aged 19 from Middlesbrough, Michael Gill, aged 17 from Ponteland and Nathan Brady, aged 17 from Durham.

Deerness Gymnastics Academy head of Acrobatics, Stuart Thompson, was also been selected as a Great Britain coach at the major international competition. Last year Stuart was named British Gymnastics Coach of the Year.

Stuart said: “There is a lot of hard work put in by gymnasts, parents and coaches to reach this standard of gymnastics. Just to be selected is a great achievement but to actually take your place on the podium and win a medal for your club and country is very special.

“Acrobatics is not a high profile sport but we have hundreds of children and young people participating at all levels at Deerness Gymnastics Academy every week and not only will they be showing their support  but will also be inspired by these six gymnasts.”

Deerness Gymnastics Academy, which has Matt Baker as its patron, has become one of Britain’s top gymnastics clubs over the past twenty years, with over 100 international gymnasts with more than seventy World and European medallists, including seventeen World and European Champions in its roll of honour. It is not only one of the most successful clubs in Great Britain but it is also recognised on the International scene as one of the top clubs in the world.
