Ten Deerness Gymnastics Academy acrobats represented the region in the final of a national competition last weekend, with two returning as National Champions.

The gymnasts qualified, for the National Final of the NDP competition, earlier this year after winning Gold in the regional finals. At the finals in Liverpool, some of the best young acrobats in the country competed for national titles, aiming to thrill and entertain the judges with their high-quality, artistic routines and choreographed performances showcasing their complex acrobatic skills.

Two of the ten returned as national champions winning Gold in the Grade 6 Women’s Pair and a further fourth place and two seventh places.

  • Women’s Pair, Grade 6: Chelsea Nesbitt and Verity Kell – GOLD
  • Women’s Group, Grade 4: Jenny Lawson, Drew Armstrong & Lili Gardner – 4th
  • Women’s Group, Grade 5: Emily Dodd, Emily Gill & Ebony Young – 7th
  • Men’s Pair, Grade 4: Jason Archer & Jonny Henderson – 7th

Deerness Gymnastics Academy in Ushaw Moor is a high-performance centre for British Gymnastics. It has a strong history in both acrobatic and tumbling gymnastics.

“This was a great result for Chelsea and Verity and a well-deserved gold medal at these national championships,” said Katie Lawton, High-performance Coach at Deerness Gymnastics Academy.

“Although it’s always disappointing for gymnasts when they don’t win a medal, they all tried their very best and put in great performances. The standard in all competitions was especially high and all in all, it’s been a very positive experience and motivated them for the next competition. What they have learnt competing against some of the best in the country will not only be great for the club and the sport of gymnastics but also provide our youngsters with valuable competition experience which can only benefit them in the future.”

“As a club we are continuing to develop acrobatics at Deerness Gymnastics Academy along with tumbling, and we have a number of ways in which people of all ages and ability can participate in both disciplines of gymnastics.”

Deerness Gymnastics Academy, which has Matt Baker as its patron, has become one of Britain’s top gymnastics clubs over the past twenty years, with over 100 international gymnasts with more than seventy World and European medallists, including four World and seven European Champions in its roll of honour. It is not only one of the most successful clubs in Great Britain but it is also recognised on the International scene as one of the top clubs in the world.

Gymnastics coaching in acrobatics, tumbling and trampolining are available to all ages from novice to elite level. Recreational classes are available for children from 3 years and baby gym sessions take place on weekdays.
