Nearly 300 children from gymnastics clubs across North East England took part in a regional competition hosted by Deerness Gymnastics Academy last week.

The region’s most promising gymnasts aged 4-16 competed in both the acrobatics and floor competitions over two days, in friendly events designed to give the young gymnasts an opportunity to perform in front of an audience in a relaxed and encouraging environment.

Competitions like this are a great way to introduce young gymnasts into the sport,” said Katie Lawton, high-performance coach at Deerness Gymnastics Academy.

“Competitions like these just wouldn’t be able to happen without the dedication and support from many people and I’d like to say a big thank you to the judges, officials, helpers and volunteers, and not least to the competitors and their coaches for making the competition day so enjoyable for everyone involved.”

“We’ve had a great response to both of these competitions, with more clubs and gymnasts than ever before wanting to participate. Although Deerness Gymnastics Academy is known as a major club in GB gymnastics and home to World, European and British champions, the club is also committed to helping to develop happy, healthy and confident children throughout the region.”

“Not only do these competitions provide a great experience for our young gymnasts but they also raise invaluable funds for our volunteer-led club which will enable us to continue to make gymnastics available to the whole community.”“We are looking forward to running more of these events again next year with more clubs from around the region attending.”
