Sweet Sixteen Qualify for British Championships

Sixteen tumblers from Deerness Gymnastics Academy have qualified for this year’s British Gymnastics Tumbling Championships to be held later this year in July.

22 tumblers competed in Sheffield last week hoping to gain qualification for the national competition. Deerness returned with 1 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals and a total of 16 tumblers qualifying for the British Championships. They include:

  • 9-10 Girls – Mary Young and Lucy Aston
  • 9-10 Boys – Samuel Reid
  • 11-12 Boys – James Richardson and Solomon Cornwell
  • 13-14 Girls – Sophie Allen, Lydia Overal and Lucia Woodhouse
  • 13-14 Boys – Lewis Westwood
  • 15-16 Girls – Shanice Davidson, Lauren Husband and Rebecca Temperley
  • 15-16 Boys – David Richardson
  • 17-18 Boys – Tom Mcguire
  • Senior Women – Georgia Clayton and Rachel Davies

“It’s a great achievement for these 16 gymnasts to qualify for the British Championships. It is a very prestigious competition and this year there will be representatives from a record 26 clubs across the country this year in the finals; which shows not only how much they have achieved just to qualify, but how the sport is developing in Great Britain,” said Glen “We had a Great weekend and now we have even more hard work to do in the lead up to British Championships in July.

Earlier this year tumblers Rachel Davies and Shanice Davidson from Deerness Gymnastics Academy returned with Great Britain Team Gold medals in the European Championships at both junior and senior level; three silver medals for Rachel Davies, Georgia Clayton and Shanice Davidson in last year’s World Championships; and in last year’s British Championships Georgia Clayton won her third National Title and Deerness also won a further four silver and one bronze medal.

Deerness Gymnastics Academy in Ushaw Moor is a high-performance centre for British Gymnastics. It has a strong history in acrobatic gymnastics and is now developing the gymnastic discipline of tumbling.

Deerness Gymnastics Academy, which has Matt Baker as its patron, has become one of Britain’s top gymnastics clubs over the past twenty years, with over 100 international gymnasts with more than eighty World and European medallists, including fifteen World and European Champions in its roll of honour. It is not only one of the most successful clubs in Great Britain but it is also recognised on the International scene as one of the top clubs in the world.

Gymnastics coaching in acrobatics, tumbling and trampolining is available to all ages from novice to elite level. Recreational classes are available for children from 3 years. Baby gym sessions take place on weekdays and adults can take a class on Thursday evenings.
