Tumblers Get 2016 Off To A Competitive Start

Deerness Gymnastics Academy is hoping to get 2016 off to a competitive start as its young tumblers enter the Regional NDP (National Development Program) Championships this weekend.

The regional championships are being held in Hartlepool on Sunday 28 February when 33 tumblers from Deerness will compete against other tumblers from the region to compete to represent the region at national level.

The 33 Deerness Gymnastics Academy gymnasts are:

  • Level 1 tumblers – Hannah Penfold, Esme Lowes, Samantha Leary, Ellie Sommerville, Daisy Gasgoine-Allen, Alexandra Ball, Sophie Reid, Lily Murphy, Malachy Gavin, Nathan Wade and Meghan Dixon
  • Level 2 tumblers – Lucy Fletcher, Anna Armstrong, Olivia Bell, Elisha Yorke and Lauren Askew
  • Level 3 tumblers – Kate Marshall, Lara Van Buiten, Abigail Raine, Beth Watson and Laila English
  • Level 4 tumblers – Mya Malthouse, Sophie Smith, Tia Barratt, Quinn Young, Katie Pinkney, Charlotte March, Tia Simpson and Tom Reid
  • Level 5 tumblers – Cleo Watson, Tia Kelly, Megan Young and Eve Coates

In total 179 gymnasts from 12 clubs right across the north east will thrill and entertain with their skills as they contend for medals in the different categories and the opportunity to proceed to the National NDP semi-finals. The top 2 in each category will make it through to the semi-finals in Peterborough in May and Sheffield in June, hoping to then qualify for the national finals.

At the same event last year, tumblers from Deerness Gymnastics Academy won 5 Gold medals and 4 silver medals with those tumblers qualifying for the semi-finals of the national competition with Deerness Gymnastics Academy eventually winning won 2 gold medals at the national final.

Deerness Gymnastics Academy in Ushaw Moor is a high-performance centre for British Gymnastics. It has a strong history in acrobatic gymnastics and is developing the gymnastic discipline of tumbling at the club with Coach Glen Wharton.

“Last year the club won 3 silver medals at World championships and was best year yet for tumbling at Deerness Gymnastics Academy. It is a growing sport both nationally and here at Deerness. These development competitions are a great way for our gymnasts to gain experience and boost their confidence as they start out in tumbling and we wish them all the best of luck,” said Glen Wharton.

Deerness Gymnastics Academy, which has Matt Baker as its patron, has become one of Britain’s top gymnastics clubs over the past twenty years, with over 100 international gymnasts with more than seventy World and European medallists, including fifteen World and European Champions in its roll of honour. It is not only one of the most successful clubs in Great Britain but it is also recognised on the International scene as one of the top clubs in the world.

Gymnastics coaching in acrobatics, tumbling and trampolining is available to all ages from novice to elite level. Recreational classes are available for children from 3 years and baby gym sessions take place on weekdays.
