Acropolis, from Deerness Gymnastics Academy, are the first winners of a new ITV sports entertainment show “Let’s Get Gold” .

A quartet of acro-gymnasts, from the acrobatic group ‘Acropolis’, wowed the judging panel of Rio Ferdinand, Freddie Flintoff, Martine McCutcheon and Una Healy with their technique, skill and athleticism and, most importantly, creativity, style and flair to win GOLD and £100,000 for the Durham club.

Hosted by Vernon Kay, ‘Let’s Get Gold’ was a sport meets entertainment mini-series broadcast in July 2012. Sporting teams from across the UK battled it out in front of a panel of celebrity pundits from the worlds of show-business and sport. Over three nights, 15 teams displayed their skills in disciplines as wide-ranging as Martial Arts and Cheerleading as they transformed their sport into the most spectacular and entertaining routine.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our senior men’s team and also Deerness Gymnastics Academy. I am really proud that the nation has seen the fantastic skills and hard work that led this team to become world champions for Team GB,” said Karl Wharton, director of gymnastics, Deerness Gymnastics Academy. “As a charitable body and volunteer led club, the prize fund is going to make such a big difference to our future but even just taking part is a great reward for all of our gymnasts and tumblers who dedicate many hours a week to developing a gymnast, developing the skills and experience to gain recognition at national and international level.”
